Is Nepal ready for tourism?

Kathmandu has seen a sudden rise in the covid-19 infected  people since the end of lockdown. There were very less covid-19 infected patients till last month. The number has increased since then. There are hundreds of new cases of coronavirus everyday in Nepal. Government plans to reopen tourism in Nepal. Domestic and international commercial flights are set to resume from August 17th. The safety and health protocols are no doubt to be strictly followed. As per the ministry, the flights will only fly to safe destinations. But is it really safe to travel to Nepal? Looking at the current situation of Kathmandu, it is very hard to tell that Nepal actually is ready for tourism.

Although Nepal might be ready for tourism but tourists are not. One of the major part of the tourism is safety. Looking at the current situation of Kathmandu or Nepal as a whole, It is very hard to expect a safe and sound tourism in Nepal as of now. Nepal sees hundreds of new cases of coronavirus everyday. The number of infected people from the virus has risen in the capital. Home ministry, today delivered another notice where they have mentioned a few key points to be effectively implemented from tomorrow which is 6th of August.
Implementation of the odd-even system: The odd-even system will be implemented starting from tomorrow where the either number of vehicles will be in use in alternative days.
Different entry points of Kathmandu valley will be strictly monitored. There will be tight security.
Huge number of gatherings are prohibited in restaurants, hotels, and party palace.
The home ministry has also mentioned that the health and safety protocols to be strictly followed by the people or else they will be penalized.

Meanwhile, the environment inside the Kathmandu valley looks normal. There are huge gatherings, transportation public as well as private are on full swing, offices are open. It is like any other normal days. While on the other hand, different districts like Dharan, Rautahat and others are set to go under lockdown again. According to recent news, experts and advisors have also advised the government to go under lockdown again. So if the necessary actions and precautions are not taken as quickly as possible, there might be a chance that the government will enforce lockdown again.

However, Airlines and Travel agents are getting ready to operate as soon as possible. The resumption of the regular flights both international or commercial flights will definitely trigger tourism in Nepal, one way or other.  Airlines, Travel agents, restaurants have been taking all the necessary precautions and following each and every health and safety protocols to provide a safe environment for tourist. But safety will only be possible if a destination as a whole is safe to travel. Government and concerned authorities should take necessary actions and precautions to create a safe environment before the arrival of tourists. Furthermore, different international airlines are flying to different destinations amid the coronavirus. As soon as the commercial flights resumes in Nepal, tourism will take place. So the government and the concerned authorities should be prepared and start to take necessary precautions from now.
