Gautam Buddha International Airport Comes into operation

Gautam Buddha International Airport has started operating flughts from 21 April, 2022. The long awaited project which is now the second International airport of Nepal has officially started operating flights from Thursday with the new runway in operation. Well, one of the popular question ' When will Gautam Buddha International Airport come into operation?' has been finally answered.

As of now, Gautam Buddha International Airport has only started domestic flights. Yeti Airlines, one of the leading fomestic Airlines company was first to use the new runway in GBIA. So we can expect domestic carriers to operate flights to and from the new international airport.

When will the international flights starts operating from Gautam Buddha International Airport?

The international flights, however, are said to be started from May 16 only. So we will be seeing the operation of international flights at GBIA very soon. Al Jazeera, the Kuwaiti airlines has already taken permission to start operating international flights from the new airport. We can expect same from other international airlines as well.

Second station incase if the international flights have to divert from TIA?

It is also said that the international flights may land on Gautam Buddha International Airport incase TIA is closed or if there are any issues over there. Previously, whenever there were any issues, whether it be sudden climate change or temporary suspension of activities at TIA, most of the flights had to divert to the nearest international airport (i.e to nearby countries other than Nepal). Now with GBIA in operation, the flights may divert to the new international airport incase there are any issues. As mentioned by The Himalayan Times, Gautam Buddha International Airport has the same capacity as that of the Tribhuwan International Airport.

Before COVID-19, there were a handful of news regarding the new international airlines showing their interest to operate flights in Nepal but unfortunately things changed back then due to pandemic. Now that the whole tourism industry of Nepal is in recovery phase and the bookings are increasing (as said), there is a chance that the international flights may expand their network to the new international airport.

Now that Gautam Buddha International Airport has started its operation, we can expect the expansion of network from international airlines to Bhairahawa. The domestic airlines has been operating flights from Bhairahawa (old airport) before and now the domestic flights will be using the new runway at the new international airport.
